NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 15, 2019) – In keeping with ancient naval tradition, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) conducted a mast-stepping ceremony March 15, this version of tradition marking a significant milestone in George Washington’s refueling complex overhaul (RCOH).

A ceremonial mast stepping, a tradition in which the ship’s sponsor and crew place coins and other memorabilia beneath the mast to be permanently sealed in the installation of the mast, took place Oct. 17. A dramatic side launch of the ship into the Menominee River followed the christening ceremony.

The Sailors have the distinction calling Anchorage, Ak. their hometown. They were asked to take part in a mast stepping ceremony, which is a shipbuilding tradition that dates back to ancient Rome, to represent the ship’s namesake city. During the ceremony, coins and other affections are placed into the mast prior to it being secured in place.
